Diffserv’s Assured Forwarding PHB: What Assurance does the Customer Have?
نویسنده
چکیده
This paper examines issues related to assuring the throughput performance parameters of a Service Level Agreement in an Assured Forwarding based Diffserv-capable IP network. In an effort to understand the kinds of quantifiable parameters that can be included in a contract, the analysis of detailed studies on throughput are presented. Seven different factors are discussed which can bias bandwidth assurance for equal paying customers. Design options for various Traffic Conditioning schemes at the edge of the network to mitigate the effect of these factors are also discussed. The scope of network for which such schemes are viable is assessed. There are open issues that need to be addressed before such schemes can achieve their desired effect on the general Internet.

Drop Probability Assurance for Delay-insensitive Applications
Loss differentiation is recommended as a service differentiation provided by an Assured Forwarding (AF) Per-Hop Behavior (PHB) in Differentiated Service (DiffServ) architecture. An Active Queue Management (AQM) technique is addressed as a suitable alternative to realize the service differentiation because the AF PHB should attempt to minimize longterm congestion while permitting short-term cong...
متن کاملExperimental Study of Bandwidth Assurance in a DiffServ Network
Inside DiffServ, the Assured Forwarding per hop behavior defines a service that guarantees the contracted target rate to the users and allows consuming more bandwidth if the network load is low. In this paper we perform an experimental study, whose key contribution is that current techniques and commercial equipment do not meet the goals of the AF PHB service in a scalable way.
متن کاملIntelligent Traffic Conditioners for Assured Forwarding Based Differentiated Services Networks
Issues related to bandwidth assurance in Assured Forwarding based Differentiated Services (Diffserv) networks have been discussed in recent research papers [7][8][11]. Some of the factors that can bias bandwidth assurance are Round Trip Time (RTT), UDP/TCP interaction and different target rates. The bias due to these factors needs to be mitigated before bandwidth assurance for a paying customer...
متن کاملOn the Use of Rate Configuration in the Interoperation between DiffServ and 802.11e EDCA
This paper investigates rate configuration of the Expedited Forwarding (EF) class of Differentiated Services (DiffServ) when used with 802.11e EDCA. The rate configuration problem is presented, and several approaches are tested and evaluated in order to solve the problem. Results reveal that the contention window makes rate configuration very hard for the highest priority class (AC_VO) in 802.1...
متن کاملEmpirical study of buffer management scheme for Diffserv assured forwarding PHB
The IETF Differentiated Services Working Group has recently standardized the Assured Forwarding (AF) Per Hop Behavior (PHB). RFC 2597 recommends that an Active Queue Management (AQM) technique be used to realize the multiple levels of drop precedence required in the AF PHB. The most widely used AQM scheme is RED (Random Early Detection). There are several ways to extend RED to a Multilevel RED ...
